INITIAL INK DRAWINGS

Having chosen my text - Lolly Willows by Sylvia Townsend, I wrote it out while trying to imagine what the text should look like to suit my chosen extract, emphasising words that seemed important to me and adding small illustrations alongside. This task helped me understand the text more in depth and connect with it.

In my initial ink drawings to illustrate the text I tried to think about every element that I could find in the text and how best to illustrate it, I especially enjoyed drawing the dancers and their dynamic movements. I think that letting the ink flow and creating washes released some of my control over the imagery and resulted in more dynamic compositions and more intriguing details on the dancers' bodies. However, as these were my very first responses they lacked thought out compositions and were focused on just illustrating what the text conveyed rather than thinking about my interpretations of what was written.

In these series I also tried to think about the sound in the text, as it was one of the elements that first attracted me to this particular passage over the others. I tried to portray the 'threshing machine' and 'mosquitos in a hot room' sounds that were mentioned in the passage, however I think that portraying these in a very direct way might have been too direct and perhaps thinking of other less obvious way of depicting these sounds might produce more interesting results. I liked the spotted mark making using my created art tools that I also used to portray the same sound and thought that I t was more atmospheric and showed the sound effect better.
