GHOST BIKE MEMORIALS - research, reflection

Ghost bike memorials are biked painted in white placed in locations where a cyclist has died as a monument or remembrance and precaution for other cyclists to stay aware of their surroundings and take care. They first appeared in Missouri in 2003 and are now present in many other locations all over the world. This tradition of bike memorials intrigued me as it's not something done by a particular artist or group but by many random individuals seemingly completely irrelevant to one another and yet united in this one tradition. The bikes also reminded me of the rocking horses in my chosen location. In a way as the rocking horses are stood where there once stood a mental asylum and when I found out about the location's history I immedeately drew a parallel between the patients of the asylum dn the rocking horses - unable to escape, trapped, uncared for and used fo rothers' entertainment. Therefore, through my interpretation of the location and its history the rocking horses could be presented as memorials for the patients in my piece of visual feedback to comment on the locations past and present. Furthermore I could borrow the idea of anonymity and my visual feedback would be based on my chosen location but in a way a commentary about all patients of mental asylums in the uk in the 19th century as all of them practiced similar completely inhumane treatments methods although some were better than others. Just like the bike monuments the rocking horses could be anonymous monuments united in their purpose.
